William Tanner Obitary

The following entries were noted following the death of William Tanner.

The City Press States that the Will of Mr Richard Tuppen Tanner late of 8 Dorset Street, Salisbury Square, Wholesale Stationer and of 48 Belsize-avenue Hampstead, who died on the 6th September was proved on 21st of that month by Mrs Mary Ann Scotney Tanner, the widow, Mr James Rogers & Mr John Macnab the executors, the personnel estate being sworn under £20,000. The testator leaves to his wife absolutely £200 and all his furniture, plate & household effects; and for life an annuity of £800 to be reduced to £200 per annum in the event of her marrying again; to his son, William Anthony Tanner, the Goodwill of his business; to his executors Mr James Rogers and Mr John Macnab £50 each and the residue of his property upon trust for all his children.

The Stationers Gazette June 27 1908 under Obituary

Mr W A Tanner of Messrs R T Tanner & Co Ltd paper merchants Salisbury Square London died suddenly on Sunday June 14.

Many years after his death Arthur Tanner, the younger brother of William wrote:

W. A. Tanner was exceedingly hot tempered. and on one occasion a mill representative came to see him, and because he could or would not do what was wanted, W. A. Tanner threw him down the stairs, and for those of us who remember the stairs in our old premises (sic Dorset Street) this was some distance. The representative did not call again for some considerable time but I am pleased to say that he is still alive, though now in retirement. I would hasten to add that his retirement was not due to his hasty journey down the stairs’.

Apparently the cause of this event was that William Tanner had been incorrectly charged overweight on an order – the mill representative was Francis Haydn Green, a paper agent, son of a previous Lord Mayor of London, Sir, Frank Green, and a cousin of Arthur Tanner’s wife. To his credit or perhaps because he deserved it, Francis never took offence and continued to call upon the Company for many years afterwards.
